C&M Arts is pleased to present About Faces, an exhibition organized in collaboration with Fraenkel Gallery, San Francisco. This survey of forty works contrasts the human visage, art’s dominant subject, as it appears in painting and in photography.

About Faces’s scope covers some one hundred and fifty years, ranging from Edouard Manet and Julia Margaret Cameron, through such contemporary figures as John Currin and Thomas Ruff.  Notable works by Richard Avedon, Chuck Close, Joseph Cornell, Pablo Picasso, Paul Strand and Andy Warhol will also be included.

The convergences between these two mediums are critical, not only because of the supremacy of the subject, but also for the heightened role that photography plays in art today.

About Faces allows for two different modes of viewing:  a historically-grounded formal and iconographic comparison as well as a freely interpretive one, in which the viewer establishes the interrelationships.
