Irish artist Sean Scully’s solo exhibition of paintings, entitled “Sean Scully: The Eighties,” will be on display at Mnuchin Gallery in New York from September 13 through October 22.
Scully is renowned for his singular, poetic mode of Post-Minimalist Abstraction, having transitioned from his earlier striped-and-gridded canvases to more painterly constructions that characterize his technique today. The exhibition aims to reflect this evolution in his oeuvre from 1982 through 1989.
The paintings reveal multi-panel constructions accompanied by geometric shapes indicating architectural motifs such as doors, windows, bricks, and stones. These are supported by the artist's bold use of color, light, and texture.
Inspired by his personal experiences and emotions, the duality of the geometric and the gestural continues to define Scully’s work. This will be the first such exhibition in the US to inspect Scully’s breakthrough moment that changed his artistic perception.
