Today’s show: “Simon Hantaï: Pliage: The First Decade” is currently on view at Mnuchin Gallery in New York until Friday, June 26. The show features a selection of Hantaï’s pliage, or folding, works from the 1960s and early ’70s. In this process Hantaï (1922–2008) sought to explore and expand the boundaries of painting by folding and knotting the canvases before painting them, allowing for fragment patterns to arise between the painted and unpainted areas of the canvas.
