L&M Arts is pleased to present THE COMPLEXITY OF THE SIMPLE, an exhibition of more than twenty important works by twenty artists of international renown. The show demonstrates the broad range open to a systematic abstraction viewed over nearly five decades. Artists represented include such mid-century masters as Mark Rothko, Agnes Martin, Ellsworth Kelly and Josef Albers, and also critical figures of more recent date such as Felix Gonzales-Torres, Liza Lou, Anselm Reyle and Tom Friedman.

Around 1960 many artists felt that the extreme emotionality of Abstract Expressionism was played out. This feeling resulted in the double stream of later twentieth-century art. One tendency found inspiration in the denigrated commercial manifestations of popular culture. The other trend focused on a rationalistic Abstract Reductivism that took the square and the cube for its emblem, black and white for its colors. Owing to its austerity, it was thought that this new abstraction would quickly burn itself out. Quite the opposite occurred. The analytical and conceptual components of this new style have lead to a vital evolution that tirelessly reinvents itself in front of an enthusiastic audience.

In the words of F. Scott Fitzgerald, "Life is more successfully looked at through a single window, after all." And yet, even through the simplicity of a single window, the life seen is no less complex.
